What Happens to Collagen Over Time?
As we age, our skin’s natural collagen production declines. Other factors like our lifestyle, stress and UV damage also play a role. The collagen our skin produces when we’re older is weaker, stiffer and less structured than younger collagen.

Padina Pavonica
Our hero ingredient, this rare brown algae is found in the warm waters along the northern and southern Mediterranean coastlines. It’s rich in antioxidants that support hydration by binding moisture to the skin.
Chlorella Vulgaris
This green freshwater algae is packed with skin-friendly amino acids that are rich in collagen-supporting peptides. High levels of vitamins and minerals also help improve skin firmness, fine lines and wrinkles.
Laminaria Digitata Extract
Hand-harvested from Roaring Water Bay, Ireland, this brown kelp extract is rich in polysaccharides, minerals and vitamins that help nourish skin and maintain hydration.
Red Algae
We use two red algae in our formulas: porphyridium cruentum, found along the Pink Granite coast of Brittany, and chrondrus crispus, which grows across the Atlantic coastline. Both help to support the skin’s barrier function.
Laminaria Ochroleuca
This vibrant golden algae thrives in the wild and turbulent seas off the coast of Brittany, northwest France. Nutrient-rich, it’s known for its hydrating and restorative properties.
Opal Skin Algae
Our proprietary Opal Skin Algae Complex blends three marine microalgae (diatoms) – including one discovered by ELEMIS. They’re encapsulated in an intelligent delivery system to enhance effectiveness.

Do ELEMIS Pro-Collagen products contain animal- or marine-derived collagen?
No, our Pro-Collagen products do not use animal- or marine-derived collagen. Instead, we use plant-derived amino acids, which can provide a functional equivalent to collagen that supports the youthful elasticity and suppleness of skin. You may see ingredients such as cocoyl hydrolyzed collagen listed – this refers to a plant-derived, collagen-like ingredient made by combining amino acids from sources such as corn, soy and wheat.
Do Pro-Collagen products directly affect the collagen in our skin?
No. ELEMIS Pro-Collagen products target and improve the visible signs of collagen decline in the skin, such as wrinkles, fine lines, sagging and discolouration.
