Hyaluronic Acid 101
2022-07-07

Hyaluronic Acid has seen quite a resurgence of late and is a key ingredient for helping skin remain hydrated and plumped. Of course, this then supports a more youthful-looking complexion as a dry skin will only emphasise lines and wrinkles. But why is it so popular over other ingredients and what does it do?
Ask the experts – what is Hyaluronic Acid?
Hyaluronic Acid is a naturally occurring polysaccharide that is known for its ability to bind 1,000 times its weight in moisture. It is naturally produced within the dermis layer of the skin, and is critical for maintaining skin hydration, supporting collagen and elastin, and giving skin its fullness and suppleness.
As part of the ageing process, hyaluronic acid production starts to decrease, resulting in skin that feels increasingly dryer, is visibly less full and plump, with signs of ageing including fine lines and wrinkles. We can often see this decrease in Hyaluronic Acid take effect as early as our 20s, with signs of dehydration being notable in an uneven skin texture, dullness and irritation. So, replenishing this ingredient is vital for fresh, youthful, bouncy skin.

The Benefits of Hyaluronic Acid
1.Improves the skin's appearance and texture
2.It is known to hold 1,000 times its weight in moisture
3.Supports skin’s moisture retention
4.It smooths visible lines to also improve the appearance of dehydration
5.It’s lightweight so doesn’t overload oily skin and is great for every skin type

Where To Find It
Hyaluronic Acid is usually found in products that focus on hydration – thick serums, masks and moisturisers. However, it can benefit your skin at every stage of your regime, which is why you’ll find it in so many of our products.

A Revolutionary Ingredient
Not all Hyaluronic Acids are created equal – they often have different molecular weights and properties. In some of our most-loved products, we use a next-generation Flash Filler Hyaluronic Acid – this hyaluronic acid has been specifically designed to support a visible plumping effect, which helps to smooth away fine lines. It also has increased resistance to the enzyme (hyaluronidase) that would normally break down Hyaluronic Acid – this means it can deliver longer-lasting hydration.

Hyaluronic Acid FAQs
Is Hyaluronic Acid safe to use?
Yes, Hyaluronic Acid is generally well tolerated by most complexions and is considered a safe ingredient.
What type of products contain Hyaluronic Acid?
Hyaluronic Acid can often be found within essences (like our Pro-Collagen Marine Moisture Essence), serums (such as our Pro-Collagen Super Serum Elixir or ULTRA SMART Pro-Collagen Complex 12 Serum), moisturisers and supplements (including our Pro-Collagen Skin Future Supplements).
Can I use Hyaluronic Acid every day?
Yes, Hyaluronic Acid can safely be used every day.
Can I use Hyaluronic Acid with Retinol, Niacinamide, or Vitamin C?
Yes, Hyaluronic Acid can be paired with most other skincare actives, including these popular ingredients. We recommend layering products that contain Hyaluronic Acid on top of formulas that contain these ingredients.
Is Hyaluronic Acid good for breakouts / blemishes?
Yes, even with acne and blemishes it is important that this skin maintains it’s moisture levels, especially as this can aid healing and reduce the risk of scarring. This is especially effective when in a water based formula, as it is often found, as those with acne/blemished skin need to limit oil-based products, yet still maintain skins hydration.
